Hi! My name is Phil. I’m in my mid-20s living on the North Shore in Sydney.
I spent four years during uni tutoring primary school students in maths, and where I originally planned to focus on high school, the demand from parents with younger kids was overwhelming.
Before long, I had a packed weekly schedule of students aged 8–12 across the Hills District of Sydney, where I used to live.
Over those years, I saw how the right support can transform not just results, but a child's confidence and self-esteem. Now that I'm working full-time, I'm exploring a way to bring that same support online without the high cost and time commitments of private tutoring or after-school programs.
After speaking to countless parents over my four years of tutoring, it became very clear that private one-on-one tutoring was the best way to boost a child's ability in maths and their confidence overall. But, only if the family could afford $50-$100 per hour, per child, per week, and the parents had the time to supervise the tutoring session and the flexibility to adjust their schedule to fit the tutor's availabilities, and the child was open to having a strange, scary adult in their home for an hour every week! How terrifying!
So, in wanting to think of a better solution for students of all abilities and situations, it led me to think, "Is there a way I can offer 99% of the value of my private tutoring sessions, but without the scheduling and supervision hassle, and at only a fraction of the price?"
I then thought back to what a typical in-person tutoring session looked like for my students. The majority of the time, we had a handful of questions to work through, and the process looked like the following:
This would take up the entire hour as we would go very deep into each question.
This led me to think "Well, I can basically offer the same thing online, and then I can reach far more students than I ever could in person."
And that's how Magpie Maths was born!
