NOTE: As you’ll see with these example videos below, I am currently using a whiteboard and recording it with my phone. I understand that this doesn’t make for the best viewing experience, and I plan on buying an iPad and using a whiteboard app soon.

How to use Magpie Maths

Magpie Maths is based on the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ of learning, where questions aren’t too easy or too hard for the student. This is the sweet spot for skill improvement.

On your first week, take a look at all of the questions (from 1-12) and pick which consecutive 6 questions best fit your ability, such as Q1-6, Q3-8, Q6-11, etc.

Then, have a go at completing those 6 questions, and click the right-arrow underneath the questions to watch the video solutions and check your work.

If you got 6/6 correct, that means those questions are too easy for your current ability, and next week you should shift up one question.

If you got between 0/6 and 4/6 correct, that means those questions are too difficult for your current ability, and next week you should shift down one question.

If you got 5/6 correct, that means you’re in the Goldilocks Zone where the questions aren’t too easy or too difficult for your ability. You should do the same question numbers next week too. This is the best level of difficulty for you to improve your maths skills.

Each week, keep shifting up or down based on how many you got correct the previous week, and over time as you improve and learn more in class, you’ll naturally move up to harder questions. See how high you can go!

Feel free to do more than 6 questions each week if you like, but 6 questions is a good amount for most students.

Have fun!
